Ms. Ortiz' Class Webpage

Ms. Ortiz' class has been learning and researching great works of enginnering built by men and women. They studied about the greatest structures built. As an end of unit activity each student built his or her own model of a scaled version of a structure of their choice. Here there are some of the final projects created by the students

The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. It was almost torn down in 1909, but was saved because of its antenna - used for telegraphy at that time. Beginning in 1910 it became part of the International Time Service.During its lifetime, the Eiffel Tower has also witnessed a few strange scenes, including being scaled by a mountaineer in 1954, and parachuted off of in 1984 by two Englishmen. In 1923 a journalist rode a bicycle down from the first level. Some accounts say he rode down the stairs, other accounts suggest the exterior of one of the tower's four legs which slope outward.

The Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most complimentary manmade views you can observe in the United States. The Golden Gate Bridge is named after the strait “Golden Gate”, which was first named “Chrysopylae” by John C. Fremont in 1846. The construction of the bridge began in January 5,1933 and was inaugurated in May 27, 1937. The bridge connects the freshness of the San Francisco Peninsula, located on the northwest of California, and the wonderful town of Sausalito. The steel used for the construction was made in New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania and was later shipped through the Panama Canal. The original color was orange vermilion. When it was built, it weighted 894,500 tons, but because of decking material it now weights 887,000 tons. It is 1.7 miles long and rises 746 ft. above water. Today about 40 million vehicles cross the bridge per year.
