What is Literacy?

Traditionally, one would describe literacy as the ability to read and write.  However, we now know that literacy goes beyond simple reading and writing. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, indicates that literacy involves the ability to read, write, calculate and communicate in a global society.
