Special Education - In addition to our special education teachers, a school psychologist, oral language teacher, speech teacher, adapted P.E. teacher and other resource specialists are on staff to provide services to identified students.

the arts at Erwin

Arts Prototype - The Arts Prototype program debuted at Erwin during the 2006-2007 school year. As part of LAUSD's efforts to reintroduce arts into schools, the program includes three components: theatre, visual arts and dance. Each genre was taught for 12 weeks in weekly fifty minute lessons.

Ten teachers participated the first year. During the 2007-2008 school year 10 new teachers will receive 8 fifty minute lessons in each of the three genres and the old cadre will receive 4 fifty minute lessons. Eventually, all of our teachers will be participating in this wonderful program which also includes funding for supplies and professional development.

Chorus and Vocal Music - All students at Erwin have a chance to participate in either a Winter or Spring musical program. Fourth and fifth grade students can join the chorus.

Orchestra - Instrumental music instruction is offered twice a week. Students interested in learning a stringed or wind instrument are selected on the basis of interest, potential, and maintenance of high classroom standards. Those who wish to provide their own instrument may also be accepted with the approval of their classroom teacher.

YDP Program - These after school classes provide homework assistance and supervision to students weekdays until 6:00 pm.

After School Playground - The after-school playground program is sponsored by the Los Angeles Unified School District and the City of Los Angeles, as an additional resource of the community recreational facilities. The program is designed to afford those students, capable of independently traveling to and from the playground, the opportunity to participate in organized games and activities. Students must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with rules and regulations of the school. Students who do not follow the rules will not be allowed to stay on the after-school playground. The after-school playground is not a childcare facility and students DO NOT need permission to leave the playground and/or the school campus. On occasion the after school playground may be closed without prior notice. The hours will be 2:20 - 6:00 P.M on regular school days, 1:20 - 6:00 P.M. shortened days, and 12:40 - 6:00 P.M. on minimum days (subject to change).
