Arts Program School
El Oro Way has the privilege of being an Arts Program School. This program brings high quality arts instruction in all three disciplines; dance, theater and visual arts. All teachers have been trained by art specialists who teach at our school. The goal of the program is to promote and implement a comprehensive visual and performing arts program available to all students. All teachers integrate the arts into their regular curriculum to provide students with a well-rounded and enriched educational program. Teachers and students alike have been enjoying this expressive program at our school and hope to continue our partnership for years to come.

Wonder of Reading Library
El Oro Way celebrated the grand opening of our Wonder of Reading Library in November 2006. The newly expanded library features a story amphitheater, study cubbies, and even a cozy reading nook complete with fireplace. Additionally, we are currently working on completing our Reading Garden, located just outside the library. This outdoor setting will include a stage area, small grass lawn area, and multiple tables and benches to bring the pleasures of reading outdoors.
Our library is open to students and parents during recess and lunch, as well as for weekly classroom visits. There are also many opportunities for parents to volunteer in our library. To learn more you can contact our school librarian or click here.

Music
At El Oro Way Elementary, we take great pride in our high- quality, school-wide music education program, led by Mr. Patrick Ridolfi. As a learning community, we make every effort to nurture and encourage the talent and the innate musical-intelligence, which we believe each child possesses.
El Oro Way students are carefully guided into a wide variety of well-planned, music-making activities. These activities are not only fun, they are also challenging and allow for (and actually encourage) a wide spectrum of creative musical expression.
We believe the knowledge, self-esteem and confidence that our students gain as they participate in this program serves to better prepare them for future success in our community.

P.E.
Hello, my name is Mr. Alevras and I am the Physical Education teacher here at El Oro Elementary School. I have a California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies. There are many reasons why I became a teacher. Most importantly, because I think it is a wonderful way to make a very positive impact on a great number of people's lives. Knowing that I can make a tremendous difference in so many people's lives is something that is very important and rewarding to me, and I hope to make it a very rewarding experience for all of my students as well.
The class expectations I have for my students are as follows:
- Be safe.
- Be respectful and kind to everyone.
- Be good active listeners.
- Participate and give your best effort.
- Take care of the school and the equipment.
- Have fun!
My goal is to establish and maintain a learning environment that is welcoming, safe, comfortable, nurturing, active, and fun for everyone involved, with the hope that I will give every student a great experience in physical education so that they will continue to be active and healthy individuals for the rest of their lives. I strive to continually motivate students to always do their best. By giving frequent praise, reassurance, and encouragement, I am helping students to gain self-confidence, feel good about themselves, and enjoy their learning experience. I believe this approach has a tremendously positive impact on the students' learning, development, and overall well-being. I have always had a love of playing sports, being physically active, and learning. My hope is to instill all of those same feelings in each of my students as well. I pride myself on being a good person and I believe that I am a very good role model for students. I have a genuine desire and willingness to teach students, not only about physical education, but about life as well. Learning about teamwork, cooperation, leadership, and respect, in addition to other social skills, is something very important students will use and benefit from throughout their lives.
My lessons are based on the Physical Education Model Content Standards For California Public Schools and involve various combinations of warm-up exercises, movement concepts, body management, locomotor movements, manipulative skills, fitness concepts, aerobic capacity, muscular strength/endurance, flexibility, body composition, self-responsibility, social interaction, group dynamics, and games.
I believe that getting regular physical activity, having a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep are the most important ways to maintain and improve a person's physical health, mental health, and their overall well-being. By being an active participant in physical education, a student is more likely to become a healthy adult who is motivated to remain healthy and physically active throughout their life. Because of this, all of my students have homework every day.
Their homework is to try to:
- Get some exercise (30 minutes or more).
- Eat and drink healthy (fruits, vegetables, protein, water, and milk).
- Get plenty of sleep (9-10 hours).
I ask students not to think of this as their homework, but to try to consider this as a way of life so that they will live longer and healthier lives. Parents, you are the key to your children's success, because at this stage of their lives, you are making most of these types of decisions for them and you are also setting an example for them. Please help to reinforce this mindset and this way of life, and you'll probably end up not only helping your children, but yourselves as well.

Student Council
El Oro Way has an active student council that is open to 4th and 5th grade students. Elections take place in the fall.
The goal of Student Council is to develop public speaking and leadership qualities in students, to encourage civic and community mindedness, and to experience democracy in action. Students attend weekly lunchtime meeting to discuss business, such as school spirit programs and school and community service projects, and have hands on experience executing programs.

Youth Services (Playground)
The LAUSD Beyond the Bell Branch provides one coach to distribute equipment and supervise students in emergencies. Because of the limited supervision, only students in 2nd through 5th grade are allowed on the afterschool playground. It is important to note that this program is very unstructured and does not include help with homework or organized activities on a daily basis. Parents should take this into consideration when making the decision to leave their children on the afterschool playground.

Student Success Team
The Student Success Team (SST) is an integral part of the process that supports success for all students at El Oro Way. SST is comprised of the child’s teacher, parents, an administrator, a special education teacher and gatekeeper, a facilitator, and other specialists who may be of assistance to the team in support of students at risk academically and/or behaviorally. Meeting monthly, the team discusses strategies, accommodations and interventions that may help a student on his or her road to success. The goal is for each child to flourish at El Oro Way.
