Old but Still Useful Macintosh Salvage/Licensing Information

Disposal policy regarding Macintosh CPU's and Apple Software licensing:
This question has come up many times in the last few weeks in Central.
This has come up a few times in West, too. Below are
helpful guidelines that P.A., Central, put together.
Customer is selling off/donating Mac for continued use:
If a customer wishes to sell or donate a Macintosh CPU, they must re-image the hard drive using the original restoration media that came with that CPU when purchased new. And if possible also include that media as well as any manuals that may have come with the CPU new. Though Apple Volume Licensing may have been bought and deployed on that CPU, that licensing is the property of the customer and cannot be transferred to another institution or individual. Further, that licensing (either bought as finished goods or Volume Licensing) can be reutilized by the customer on other institutionally owned systems, so no loss of productivity ensues.
Customer is disposing of Mac for recycling or trash purposes:
The best method disposal is to initialize the hard drive as this will destroy any customer sensitive data that might exist on the HD in addition to releasing the customer from possible software copyright infringements. Some accounts remove the HD and then drill a hole through it to further discourage any would be snoopers.
If your customer wishes to sell or donate a CPU and does not have the restoration media that came with the CPU, they can then use the following resources to research what version of Mac OS came with that CPU and load that at a minimum. No other software (Apple or third party) can be loaded at this point as the original restoration media cannot be located and included and therefore verified. To be legal, the customer must either include the original restoration media or include just the baseline OS that the CPU originally shipped with.
A database of all Apple Macintosh systems ever built that includes
among items a listing of what OS initially shipped can be found
