YouTube to Video File Conversions
added August 4, 2009

YouTube is blocked wthin LAUSD network.

Some YouTube links provide alternative websites to download or view files from alternative sources. You would need to identify those sources browsing YouTube outside LAUSD.

Here are some ways to convert YouTube files for viewing from you computer within LAUSD:

KickYouTube
http://kickyoutube.com With whatever youtube address you have, you take out the www. And replace with kick which lets you download the movie as a .mp4

(this link is blocked within LAUSD)

Zamsar
http://zamzar.com you have to wait for them to email you.

MediaConverter and Vixy
http://mediaconverter.org/ and http://vixy.net/ because they give you
a link right on the website to download the converted files.

Locate DTV transmission tower locations here. Nearly all LA area DTV transmisions are in the UHF requencies. From Gardena nearly all are over 26 miles away.

Inside or attic installations reduce signal up to 50%.

Over air DTV is not compressed as done in cable or satellite. Over air DTV Quality is claimed to be better.

DTV images are seen as "perfect" or "none". If a snowy image appears, an analog signal is being picked up.

Diagram for permanent antenna installation on page 2 here (not an endorsement of the company).

Do searches for "DIY antenna" or "do it yourself UHF antenna" to find cheap way to build your own antenna.

Anecdotal information:

Clay MS had two converters with rabbit ears in use on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2009. They got great reception. The school is on a elevated location.

Use Newer Web Browsers

An alternative browser to Internet Explorer on PCs and Apples is Firefox 3.0. Found as a free download from http://www.mozilla.com .
It is more capable, may be more secure and less trouble prone than Internet Explorer or Safari (Apple). Firefox is the best browser for Moodle and Google use.

On Apples, especially older models, the browser "Camino" may provide access to new enhanced websites.
Camino can be downloaded from: http://www.mozilla.org

Safari 3.1, a new version for Apples and PCs is available.

Options on software to create a website and
Post on LAUSD

There are many choices. Here a few choices are listed. Along with website creation software a means of uploading the site to LAUSD is needed. Fugu is a popular choice for Apple users.

- Office - Word

- iWeb on an late version Apple with Fugu (a SFTP - Secure File Transfer Protocol) with LAUSD website hosting.
LAUSD Web hosting information here.
Sample iWeb school site here.

Alternative websites - probably best for teachers:

- Google Page Creator http://pages.google.com/
(A Google account is needed.) The e-mail in the account can be your LAUSD.net account. Google is not a host for the pages. Use with Fugu (a SFTP - Secure File Transfer Protocol) with LAUSD website hosting.

- DreamWeaver
For software to create your site, DreamWeaver is the most popular as a commercial software. Training is found through
http://ctap.lacoe.edu/workshops/ or http://ctap.lacoe.edu/calendar/index.html
There is a three day training at LACOE offered about twice a year. It is a combination of Photoshop to create a template and Dreamweaver to create a website. A $25 dollar fee is required. One must attend all three days.

Learning Zone may have classes on webdesign:
LearningZone LAUSD Homepage > Employees > InsideLAUSD > Learning Zone > Courses > Course Offerings

Macromedia has some online support at:
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/
dreamweaver/video_tutorials.html

You can buy DreamWeaver (get the Studio MX 2004 suite) from Educational Resources linked from:

LAUSD School and Office Portal Information
The creation of all portal sites (school, office, business function, etc.) follows the same process. To accommodate, a meeting needs to be scheduled with a representative/customer from the interested organization. The outcome of the meeting will be that an action is taken on the part of ITD to produce a series of wire frame diagrams that layout the entire website, map out the main and sub navigation points and identify the targeted content topics/areas.

After completing any required modifications, a signoff is supplied to the customer. Once returned, ITD moves to the design component of the process. That entails taking a couple of the wire frames, incorporating the design elements and supplying the customer with a few samples to give you the overall look and feel of the site. Upon completion, an acceptance doc will be provided. The final stage involves ITD developing the site, and the customer incorporating the content.
Training is available through the Training group and can be scheduled accordingly.

Once the site is ready to go live, the final acceptance document is provided and upon return, the site launch date will be determined. Feb. 2007 Currently, all portal sites use the same header and footer for all portal pages.

Feb. 2007 We are not at a point where we are able to accommodate different looks for schools vs. offices. So, if a school wants to be part of the Portal, the design of an office and school are consistent.
However, we are working towards being able to change this so that a school can retain their uniqueness/individualism by being able to customize the site. Among the design changes being reviewed are to include an extended color palette for the purpose of incorporating school colors and being able to change the color combinations in the sites navigation bar (currently housed on the left side) along with in the navigation bar orientation.

Reality check:
1. It is not easy to start this on your own or transfer to the LAUSD server without assistance.
2. Once established, a website is easy to maintain.
3. A few hours a day may be required to support a school website if you are supporting dozens of groups or teachers.
4. The LAUSD webmaster is not a resource to get assistance with DreamWeaver.

Wireless Installation at Schools
Funding for LAN Modernization has been shifted to Facilities New School Construction.

Monitor LAN and Wireless update schedules by going to InsideLAUSD > eLibrary and do a search with "IT Infrastructure Strategic Execution Plan". This plan is updated at least annually.

July 2008- Buying a wireless device for your office or school:
- new District Spec wireless devices can be purchased from Arey Jones ONLY if they are connected directly to the purchase of a computer cart.

- ONLY CSIU may put in a standalone access point. Contact Jeff B. or Armando S.

Problems with wireless at work and home:
1. Your access point has a channel number 1-11. If nearby devices have a channel number close to yours, you may not have good or any access.

2. Laptops and wireless printers are sometimes broadcasting on a wireless network and competing with your wireless access point. Laptops are inadvertently configured to be computer to computer wireless networking. It may be viruses turn on computer to computer wireless networking, also.
