Physical education departments should start planning how to spend the physical education block grant money that has come from the state. Don't rush out to do this, you have at least three years to plan and spend the money. Each Los Angeles Unified school will be getting a minimum of $2,500 if you are a small school. Larger schools will be getting approximately $19 per student based on total school enrollment of 06/07 school year. The school will have to write a plan on how they plan to use the money, this will be submitted to your local district director in charge of your school for approval. There are four steps here are the first.

First Step
The first step in writing a good plan is to have your physical education department read through the grade level physical education standards for your school. Look at what equipment you do not have that you will help you teach to those standards. You will need to explain how what you plan to purchase will help you meet those standards. This requires much investigation and discussion about the standards. This is the first step, I will add three more steps later. This first step can not be done quickly, the discussion should be started now but not completed until your department has all been through the Standards Level 1A and 1B workshops.

Second step
Write your plan for the funding. Explain how these purchases will be used in helping students be active at a moderate to vigorous level for 50% of the total class-time minutes.

Third step
Explain how these purchases will help improve implementation of the district recommended Fitnessgram portocol outlined in the Fitnessgram Administrative Checklist (MEM-3258.0) This check list must be filled out and initialed by the appropriate person responsible for making sure the tasks are accomplished.

Thacher School Retreat for LAUSD PE Teachers
LAUSD Physical Education Teachers from kindergarten through twelfth grade experienced an extraordinary series of professional developments at Thacher School in Ojai, CA during the week of July 12-17, 2009. The teachers were in elementary, middle and high school groups. The learned and participated in a series of software programs, exercise routines, lesson planning, personal fitness accessment, and a selction of evening classes. Two keynote speakers provided additional insights and ideas - additional motivation was not needed based on the participants' comments!

Expected outcomes of the weeklong residential retreat include:
- continuing networking
- sharing of resources
- participation as evolving leaders at participants' schools
- completion of Salary Point requirements

- use of the Fitnessgram at Middle and High Schools
- growth of professional development
- expansion of residential Professional Development at Thacher in 2008
- consider having coaches attend Professional Development at Thacher in 2009.

Other LAUSD teacher groups attended weeklong residential professional development during July, 2007and 2008, including Certified Cisco Network Academy (CCNA), LAVA Online Content Development, LAVA Online teacher Development, and Science Instruction.

The data needed from SIS is defined in the top of the second link.

Fitnessgram Licensing Uniqueness on a Mac-
On a Mac, the license of an individual FitnessGram appears to be for one user account on one computer.
Typically, a software license is for any user account on one computer.
I am unfamiliar if more than one account on Windows has access to a single license.
As of July, 2007, the Mac update to 10.9 will not allow the Fitnessgram to work. Mac 10.4-6 functions fine.

Removal of FitnessGram on a Mac -
After several trials, it appears the correct way to uninstall FitnessGram needs to be done from the specific user account using the uninstall feature on the CD. THEN manually delete the remaining FitnessGram folder than is in the specific user's Application Folder (need to confirm) and empty the trash.

Types of FitnessGram Licensing -
- a Stand-Alone (Non-Network) Version for a single computer (Windows or MAC);
- a Small Network Version for networking multiple computers within a single school (LAN-Windows or MAC); and
- a District SQL Server Version for networking larger numbers of computers in multiple schools throughout the district (WAN--Windows or MAC client computers).
NOTE: A server would need extensive testing and an approval process before going online at a school.
See:
- BUL-1553 Security Standards for Networked Computer Systems Housing Confidential Information
- An approval needed for TCP/IP port 31047 if a server where to be set up at your school.
