District Reading Goals
Ensure that District Reading/Language Arts Programs are fully implemented through a rigorous academic curriculum.

Improve pedagogy and refine teacher practice in order to facilitate student learning.
.

Coach Support Equipment
In June, 2005, iBooks (Local 8 Book Support) were purchased with Title I funds for use by coaches in all content areas and Title I Coordinators. Along with the iBooks, a HP4600dn laser printer, a DaLite 100" diagonal portable screen, and Epson 61P LCD projector were purchased for each of seventy-two (72) schools for the purpose of disseminating data and any professional development. These items are to be shared with coaches in language arts, math, science, and with Title I coordinators. The school should take the lead in how these items are stored. LD8 supplied an initial set of toner cartridges. LD8 has no funds for additional supplies for the printer. For printer supplies, use LAUSD Storeswarehouse. Prices are low and delivery is fast.

Original LD8 Instructional Memo #127 sent to Principals in June, 2005, here. Quote: "..Before the end of this fiscal year, your school will be receiving equipment to support professional development. The primary function of the printer will be to facilitate teachers’ analysis of quarterly student assessment data reports. ..."

The serial numbers for the 82 iBooks purchased in June 2005 for schools is listed at:

Waterford Early Reading Program Support

Last update, October 24, 2006

Note 1: WEB PAGE FOR WATERFORD SUPPORT AT LAUSD
For those sites that are using the Waterford software here at the District, we have setup a new page dedicated to Waterford and any support items related to it. This page can be found in the TechReps section of the ITD Technical Support site: http://techsupport.lausd.net/waterford_techrep.htm

One item that should be noted on this page is the special number for LAUSD support of Waterford - (888) 977-7111. This number can be used for any issue related to Waterford. Hardware or Software, warranty or non-warranty issues are handled at this number. Pearson Digital Learning, who handles this support for the District has also provided additional contact information on this page.

Please make sure that you share this information will all staff members who use the Waterford software in their classroom.

Note 2: Adding licenses to a school from schools not using Waterford computers is OK. Computers would need to be physically transferred. Purchasing additional licenses (ex. we have 30 and want 20 more) requires a few approvals. Contact your Reading Coordinator for details.

Note 3: There is a support contract in effect for the 2006-2007 school year. Details... not here yet.

Item: 33.
Board of Education Revised Report No. 464 – 05/06
".. an amendment to an agreement to provide technical support for the Waterford reading program,... ."

Below is a set of exchanges on questions on Waterford support and transfer of licenses from old computers to new computers.
Consider this information as a "work in progress".

Waterford software is not easily installable on nor transferable to
another machine. It can be done, and the 1st requirement would be the hardware specs. After that, there are many other issues. The hard drive will have to be re-partitioned. Most drives come pre-configured with only 1, the c:\ partition. Waterford needs to be on a separate space ont he hard drive, the d:\ partition. The software takes up approximately 60gb on the hd, so if it's not a newer system, that will be most of the available space. Installing the software will take several hours with dvd's (sent to customers), or about 2 with usb external drive (Pearson tech tool). An easier method of installation is to create a master image based on 1 type of hardware. The master hd can be used to image (or clone) other machines that are similar. This would only be helpful if you didn't have multiple machine types with different hardware.
As you can see, Waterford is not a small program that fits on a single
cd and can be moved easily to another pc. I'm assuming the
decommissioned unusable computer that was referred was the type
purchased originally in summer 2001. I am still seeing the software run just fine on that old hardware, given that the failing parts are
replaced accordingly.

(Question on exchanging/tranferring individual computer licenses for an web server based program needs to be reviewed)

-

The "LAUSD Waterford Early Reading Program" MEM-2343 is here.
The Waterford rep for LAUSD is seeking to have a updated version.
Transferring licenses is discussed in MEM-2343. Specific details are not given.

If you want to expand licenses without going through a lengthy
approval process, your principal can inquire if other schools that do
not use Waterford computers (non-repairable and deemed salvage) and ask they transfer them to your school rather than send them to Salvage. From MEM-2353. With transferred computers, the licenses can be used on new or current computers then the transferred unused computers can be removed. (Hopefully, a way of doing this without the moving the computers can be established.)

Here is a note on Waterford upgrade considerations..
"Thanks for getting in touch with me regarding Waterford CPU's. In
speaking with our IT (J T) there are two options for those schools whose Waterford computers have been deemed inoperable;
1. They would need to order a new Waterford CPU from Arey Jones with Waterford on it or
2. They would need to upgrade to the new Waterford 4.0 which will
allow it to be put on any CPU (PC or MAC) that meet the minimum specs.

--

In speaking with DK that seems to be what they are looking to do.
Jack was adamant about not just looking at the specs. for cpu's they
already have and trying to load Waterford onto those computers. While that is an option to schools wanting to do this, Pearson would not be able to guarantee that they would operate properly nor be responsible for software issues associated from this. Those computers would have to be reconfigured and there would be a charge associated with that comparable to schools site purchasing new computers from Arey Jones or Upgrading to the new Waterford 4.0 on the Media Server. (may need a few approvals to purchase??)
If there are any questions you might have going forward please be in
touch.

P. S. TS, thanks for getting me in touch with MP. We are
looking into the Waterford Informational site and some other issues
regarding the protocol for end users calling for support of their
Waterford CPU's. I will keep you posted as we nail this down.

Document Camera Used at LD8 Meetings
The document camera we use is the AverMedia’s AVerVision 330.
It has been replaced by the 300p. See:
http://aver.com/ppd/v300p.html
This should be about $1000.
For LCDs, we order Epson LCD projectors in the $800-$900 range with manual lens controls.
The vendor we commonly use is KIS Computer Center
KIS contact info here.
Other vendor and product information can be found at:
http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/District_8/tech/files/
TechnologyPurchasing.htm

Added August, 2006 AverVision 330 Document Cameras need to have the Dip Switch #2 (the tiny white switches seen along the side) gently pushed UP to use a LCD projector. (All Dip switches need to be in the UP position to use with LCD projectors.)
Dip switch troubleshooting tips:

1) Check the dip switch setting on the unit. It is located next to the Light module DC input. Make certain that all the dips are on UP position.
2) If all the dips are on UP, but the unit still not working. Set the dips to DOWN first, then set to UP again.
3) Disconnect all the cables from the unit, and connect the power cord first, then connecting the LCD projector.

HP 4650n Laser Printer Information Part 1 of 3
Collating Problem From Apple to HP 4650dn Solved

Apple and Hewlett Packard have provided a solution to the inability to collate on 4650dn printers with OS 10.4.
Directions:
Drivers may be found here. If not..
Go to www.hp.com > search "4560dn" (at bottom of screen)
- "Download drivers and software"
- select Operating System "Mac OS x"
- go to "Software"
- "HP Color LaserJet Installer 11Apr.2005 Rev 4.10
- click "download"
- after download click on "HP ColorLJInstallerv4.10EN" found on desktop
- "Continue"
- "Install"
- Open "LaserJetReadMe" file
- Follow directions on getting the printer installed using Apple's "Print Center".

When a PPD (Postscript Printer Description) driver is selected, it will be the "HP Color LaserJet" (empty space - it should not say V3010.107 like other PPDs near it.)

. Assistance may be needed in getting the Printer address for setting up IP printing. See PART 2, below.
See part 3

HP 4650n Laser Printer Information Part 2 of 3
HP 4650dn Printing Information

Q. How can I add a network printer to an Apple without a network IP address?

Notes:
1. AppleTalk or EtherTalk on an HP printer, needs to be turned on. HP printers are usually shipped with EtherTalk ON as a default.
2. On the computer, AppleTalk needs to be turned on in "Airport" (if wireless) or "Ethernet (if wired) or to find printers in the following method. AppleTalk can only be turned on in one area at a time. See System Preferences > Network to to turn on Appletalk.
A. Find a Printer -- Apple menu > System Preferences > Print and Fax > Printing > + (plus sign) > do search with "Default browser" > a "Bonjour" printer list will appear > the HP4650 will appear in the list > select and test.

Q. I get Error messages on the Printer, what do they mean?
A: Some of the information below is for a qualified repair person to use. Some of the information here for reference purposes.
For reference.
If error messages appear and they reference tasks that are not part of a typical user routine (restart, replace cartridges, unplug, etc.) - call the HelpDesk 323.224.2277 or use the WebForm http://techsupport.lausd.net/webform.htm
Restarting often clears up some error messages.

Power surges and momentary outages may require the printer to be turned off, unplugged, re-plugged and restarted.
Is your printer connected to a good surge protector?

HP 4650n Laser Printer Information Part 3 of 3
Printing SOAR Data to the HP 4650n Laser Printer

Some persons have trouble printing SOAR data from iBooks to the HP4650n provided by Local 8 to 72 Title 1 schools in 2005.

Try this workaround...

In the Print dialogue box you will find the ability to save the page as
a ".pdf" (Adobe Acrobat File. In the "Print" dialogue box see the "PDF"
drop menu in the lower left corner. See "Save As PDF" in the drop down.
Save the SOAR data as a PDF. Open the PDF in Adobe Reader and print.
Note 1: by default, Apple may open the .pdf file in Apple's "Preview".
Try to print in Preview - it may work, also. If not, open the file with
Adobe Reader while Adobe Reader is open (the typical File > Open > File
name ...).
Adobe Reader should be on all the iBooks. It should be in the
"Applications" folder. Or, you can do a search for Adobe Reader.
Note 2: If the .pdf page size is too big, you can reduce the size of the
pages to be printed by percent in the "Page Set Up" dialogue box.
