Message From Michael Romero,
New Local District 8 Superintendent

I am honored to have been selected as the Superintendent for Local District 8. I am committed to serving all of the constituents in the communities of San Pedro, Wilmington, Lomita, Harbor City, Carson, Gardena, and South Los Angeles. We celebrate the magnificent diversity in Local District 8 and pledge that all of our students will receive a high quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.

As I begin my tenure as Superintendent, I want to share my priorities with you:

  • We will work to ensure that we provide high quality instruction and a coherent and rigorous curriculum in every classroom to facilitate learning and achievement at high levels.
  • We will facilitate the use of data to drive all decision-making and ensure effective core instruction for all students, coupled with support and intervention, when students need extra assistance or accelerated learning.
  • We will build the capacity of every adult who works with children through the establishment of professional learning communities that translate into improved teaching and learning.

With administrators, teachers, staff, parents and community members working together, we can realize our vision of 100% of our students being college prepared and career ready. Your partnership is critical to our success, and I welcome your input on how better to serve you.

See this message and more information "About Local District 8".

"College Bound Dreams”
Can Become Real for Local 8 Students

Over four hundred families in the LAUSD Local District 8 area are participating in a project “College Bound Dreams” to inspire and help students underrepresented in Advance Placement and Honors classes graduate high school and attend college.

College Bound Dreams had its first event – a dinner at the Torrance Gateway Holiday Inn during November. Thirty-five students and their parents from each of several Local 8 high schools including Banning, Carson, Narbonne, San Pedro, Washington, Harbor Teacher Prep., and Middle College plus four middle schools attended.

College Bound Dreams will provide students with planning workbooks, AVID training, field trips, coaching by college counselors, parent assistance, teacher training, guest speakers, motivational events, and a continuing support environment. Plans are to include all eleven Local 8 middle schools next year.
