"College
Bound Dreams”
Can Become Real for Local 8 Students
Over
2000 families in thirty-five schools within
LAUSD's Local District 8
area are participating in a project “College
Bound Dreams” to inspire and help students underrepresented
in Advance Placement and Honors classes graduate high
school and attend college.
The
College Bound Dreams Project now includes students
in elementary schools. Fifth grade students participate
in workshops that focus on interests and linking
those interests to A-G courses, academic, college
and career planning.
Students
in elementary, middle and high schools learn to examine
current academic behaviors. They learn to create
appropriate and attainable goals. Through the portfolio
process, students become accountable for their goals,
grades and progress.
College
Bound Dreams will provide participating schools
with planning materials,
access strategies, field trips, coaching by college
counselors, parent assistance, enrichment opportunities,
guest speakers,
motivational events, and a continuing support
environment.
Parents
engagement is an integral part of the project. Parents
are invited to all planning events culminating with
student led conferences in the spring.
Students
and families examined current class programs and
aligned them to Individual Culmination and Graduation
Plans as well as UC and California State requirements.
Families also engaged in interview processes about
study groups, learning styles, expectations and
dreams for college. Schools have been provided College
Bound Dreams portfolios and curriculum for workshops
around topics such as extracurricular activities,
academics and personal social challenges also known as
intangibles.
College
Bound Dreams is supported by LAUSD’s Closing
The Achievement Gap and Local District
8.
