For the second year in a row, a student team
from Downtown Magnets High School placed in the Los Angeles Times “Ticker Tape
Rally” stock market game for the Los Angeles County high school section. The
team, consisting of two students, Rosin Barillas and Annie Aw, was given $10,000
(in imaginary funds) to invest in four stocks and one mutual fund. They tracked
their investments over the semester. They placed third and the team received
$100. Mr. Jarrett, the Economics teacher was extremely proud of the team. In
February, the team, along with Mr. Jarrett and Principal White, attended an
awards banquet at the Los Angeles Times.

Educators the Money!
Teachers Mr. Jocz and Ms.
DePaolo, and counselor Mr. Perey, received a grant from CiviConnections for
$7500. This federal grant will assist these educators in creating service
learning projects based on students’ interest in the local neighborhood.

Neutrogena has recognized Ms. Hise’s Digital Imagery class as a featured
classroom in their annual competition addressing the folk art genre. This
year’s theme was Carnival and Ms. Hise’s students created masks to
represent this theme. Three students are finalists and on May 12, Neutrogena
will announce the winners.
