SERVICE CLUBS

Library Club



Students can participate in the Library Club under the supervision of the school librarian. Students serve after school to help return library books to the shelves. A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.

Lunch Bunch

Upper grade students with good academic standing can participate as part of the Lunch Bunch. Upper grade students participate during class time to help the lower grade students with lunch. A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.

SPECIAL TEAMS


Basketball Team

Students may choose to play on the girls or boys team which has practice after school. Games against other teams are held on the weekends.A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.


Drill Team
Students may try out for the Broadacres Award Winning Drill Team. Lower grade students may participate on the Mascot team. Upper grade students can participate on the Upper Grade Team. Team members must purchase uniforms and participate in after school practices. Members in good academic standing perform at Broadacres's special events and compete against other teams on select weekends. A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.



Track Team

Track members who attend the after school practices are able to participate in Broadacres Annual Track Meet in the spring which is coordinated by the Broadacres after school playground supervisor. Students have the opportunity to compete against other students on their grade level in events such as the 50 yard dash, 100 yard dash, 200 yard dash, and the 400. Medals are awared for participation and for placing first, second, or third in a race for each grade level. A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.

OTHER ACTIVITIES


Chorus


Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to try out for the Broadacres Chorus which is directed by our music teacher. Student have practice during selected recesses. Students perform at Broadacres special events. A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.


Play Leaders


Third graders who have good citizenship can be selected by their teachers or the assistant principal, to participate as a playleader for a first of second grade classroom. These students help their designated play group to play safely in their play area and follow the rules for the games to be played in the play area. A participation certificate is presented for continuous service at the end of the school year.


Student Council

Upper grade students can run for student body offices such as president, vice-president, sergeant at arms, secretary, and histoian. These students must be in good academic standing, must meet application deadlines, and present a persuasive speech to upper grade students.

Interested lower grade students may be selected by classroom teachers to participate in weekly meetings which occur during recess breaks. At the end of the school year, officers and class representatives are presented with participation certificates for continuous service .

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Winter Program

Our Winter Program takes place in December the week before winter recess. All grade levels participate in the program. Family and friends are welcome to attend the performance in the auditorium at the scheduled time. Check our marquee for show times.Student PhotoStudent PhotoStudent Photo


Black History Program
Our Black History Program takes place in February in hohor of Black History Month. Interested students and classes participate in the program. Family and friends are welcome to attend the performance in the auditorium at the scheduled time. Check the marquee for show time.


Spring Dance
The Spring Dance takes place in...the spring. All grade levels participate. Family and friends are welcome to attend the performace on the playground. Check the marquee for show time.




Astronomy Star Gazing Family Night
This year (2002-2003) the PTO sponsored this November event. Participants were able to see the craters on the moon and those who were patient enough were able to see the rings of Saturn through an eleven foot telescope! There were kid friendly telescopes, robotic telescopes, and a revolving binocular chair. There was a star gazing slide show and presentation. It was an inexpensive ($1/person), informative, and fun-filled evening which included hot chocolate and popcorn!


Aquarium on Wheels
The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific came to Broadacres. This PTO sponsored event began with an auditorium presentation that included life sized models of a walrus and a whale. In the aquarium on wheels truck, students were also able to touch small marine animals such as starfish, sea urchins, and baby sharks.
