Pre
Kindergarten
The students in PreKindergarten have gotten off to a good start in school. We have been working on having the students understand and follow the classroom rules and routines. We have learned how to recite the calendar, and sing the days and months of the year. We have been learning how to use our school supplies appropriately. We have been practicing our cutting, pasting, coloring and name writing. We are studying Fall and the changes we are seeing outdoors. We have learned about Johnny Appleseed, Christopher Columbus and Halloween. We look forward to learning about Thanksgiving. We are learning how pumpkins grow, and we look forward to visiting the Pierce College Pumpkin Patch. Our parents have been attending our weekly parent education classes. Parents have begun reading daily to their children and are maintaining a Book It monthly reading log which will win students free pizza at Pizza Hut.

We have begun reading a new Big Book our third, called “Our Neighborhood at Work”. In this unit students will be reading and communities and the people who work in communities. Ask your child about the jobs of different community workers your child encounters every day, and what they think the job entails. Please have your child bring something to share for our concept/question board. This can be a photograph of someone at work, a magazine or newspaper cut out of a worker, a picture drawn at home, etc. In mid November we will begin our “Machines in the Garden” unit. As always, continue reading daily for 15 minutes and fill out your child’s reading log. Practice builds fluency! Thank you, First Grade teachers

Fifth Grade . The fifth graders have started the year off with “a head full of steam.” We are rumbling ahead, and enjoying a smaller number of students in each classroom. All three classes have been rigorously completing lessons in all academic areas. Our focus early in this school year in Language Arts is reading comprehension; in Math we have been reviewing fourth grade standards in multiplication and division. Science lessons have been taking place weekly, as it will be included on the standardized test at the end of the year. Physical Science is the first area of science that will be covered. We would like to welcome the parents back for another exciting year. As like every year we would like to remind parents that your support is important for our students to be successful. We look forward to a wonderful year
