BIRMINGHAM HIGH SCHOOL
JOURNALISM/TECHNOLOGY MAGNET
A Communications School for the 21st Century

MISSION STATEMENT

The magnet program's mission is to prepare students for the 21st century.

They will be

• Effective Communicators

• Technologically Proficient

• Socially Responsible

• Critical Thinkers

We use a variety of methods -- team teaching, community building, and innovative teaching techniques -- to accomplish this goal.

Birmingham's Journalism/Technology Magnet is a four year college preparatory program.

In addition to the integration of journalism and technology in its core classes, the magnet also offers specialized electives in journalism, yearbook, drama, speech, film analysis and creative writing.

The newspaper, "Stars and Stripes" is a student publication distributed regularly to the entire student body. The magnet program is enhanced by a 31 station IBM computer lab and a Macintosh graphic design center. In addition the yearbook staff hosts an extensive Macintosh computer lab.

While magnet students have the benefit of being in a "school within a school", they are also represented in all areas of student life at Birmingham High --sports, cheerleading, homecoming, prom, student government, marching band, academic decathelon, speech and debate.

LAUSD students who are interested in attending may apply through the "Choices" brochure available at all schools.
