TECHNOLOGY VISION STATEMENT 

Second Street Elementary will be a school at which technology is an integral part of the school's daily instructional program. We envision teachers integrating technology across the curriculum enabling student achievement to reach its highest level. 

  

 

TECHNOLOGY MISSION STATEMENT 

  

Second Street School students and staff will learn to utilize a variety of technologies to enhance student learning, instructional capabilities and school - home communication. We have a strong commitment to provide each student with a balance curriculum stressing high quality academic program 

  

 

School Description 

  

Second Street School is a medium urban elementary school consisting of classes from pre k to fifth grade. Our enrollment is over 700 students. The school population is 97% Hispanic with more than 75% Spanish Language Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. 100% of the students qualify for the free lunch program. Currently all first , second , and third grades are in classes with 20 or less students (20:1). 

 

 

Curricular Needs 

  

 

The focus of our effort to improve student achievement is through literacy across the curriculum. A high number of our students qualify for chapter 1 funds. Our Stanford Nine test scores in reading and math fall below the 50th percentile. We do not see technology as an end to itself but as a means for students to develop reading, language, math, science, social studies, research and writing skills in an involving, content rich curriculum. We feel that effective use of technology can be a means to enable our students to meet district and state curriculum standards leading to improved test scores. 

  

Current Status of Technology 

  

Student Accessibility 

For the 1997-1998 school year we have 1 mini lab with ten workstations accessible to students. The lab consists of 1 IBM PS/2-55, 10 Apple ][c computers. It has 1 ink jet printer, 1 dot matrix printer that the students use.  Currently a teaching assistant is assigned to teach students and maintain the lab. This lab is not networked nor is it connected to the internet. 

 

There are 4 classrooms that are connected to the internet. Rooms 7 and 8 have MAC 6500, room 9 has a MAC 630 CD and room 5 has a COMP 386. 

A combination of computers are available in the classrooms. Some have Apple II Cs and / Apple II GS. A list of our inventory is included in the plan. 

 

Parent Accessibility 

The parent volunteers can utilize the lab during school hours. Parents are encouraged to come in and use the technology available to them. However with the size of the lab it is very difficult to have any type of on-going education for the parents. 

 

Infrastructure 

We have had difficulty expanding the use of technology at Second Street because of an underdeveloped infrastructure. We are spread out among three two-story buildings, one single story building and one new bungalow cluster. The electrical wring is inadequate to support current technology. To bring Second Street up-to-date and able to support new technology it will be necessary to make a great investment in the infrastructure. 

  

Instructional Objectives 

  

We are listing computer literacy skills in our grade level objectives, we recognize that these skills are not to be developed in isolation from District and State grade level curriculum. All computer skills and activities need to be integrated into the regular instructional program appropriate to that grade level. We also recognize that computers present an ideal vehicle for individualized and small group activities addressing the needs of both students significantly below grade level - with additional practice and remediation in a non judgmental, positive environment- and providing those students with exceptional ability the opportunity to develop their talents to the utmost. 

 

Pre- K and Kindergarten 

 

* Demonstrate computer etiquette an knowledge of rules for computer use. 

* Identify the components of the computer - monitor, keyboard, CPU and 

mouse. 

* Open and close a program or window. 

* Manipulate the mouse and utilize the return, space and arrow keys. 

* Create a simple drawing. 

* Respond appropriately within a software program. 

 

First Grade 

 

* Type name and basic words within a software program. 

* Maneuver within a simple software program. 

* Respond using letters and numbers. 

* Create a simple one page document of their work utilizing a drawing and/ 

or a word processing document e.g. KidPix. 

* Utilize a CD ROM appropriate to their grade level. 

 

Second Grade 

  

* Begin to develop keyboarding skills. 

* Create and edit simple word processing documents incorporating text 

and graphics. 

* Utilize an appropriate math software program to develop math skills of 

addition and subtraction and problem solving. 

* Utilize software programs to develop reading skills. 

* Utilize CD ROM interactive books to develop reading comprehension 

skills. 

* Save work on disk. 

 

Third Grade 

  

* Continue to develop keyboarding skills. 

* Create student written books using a word processing program. 

* Utilize painting an drawing tools to create an illustration for their work. 

* Use grade level appropriate reading, math, social studies and science 

software. 

* Begin to use multimedia, e.g. Hyper Studio, to develop a simple 

presentation. 

* Begin to utilize CD ROM encyclopedia for research. 

* Begin to utilize the internet for resource and research. 

* Save benchmark projects onto a personal disk that will be passed on to 

the the next grade. 

 

Fourth Grade 

  

* Demonstrate increased proficiency in word processing by writing reports 

for reading, science and social studies. 

* Use desktop publishing to produce a newspaper, flier, invitation or poster 

related to one of their curriculum studies. 

* Develop a multimedia presentation incorporating word processing and 

images.

* Demonstrate use of Claris Works or other multi functional programs, by 

producing a graph and spreadsheet related to their grade level 

curriculum. 

* Utilize the Internet for research , keeping a record of sites used. 

* Learn how to E-Mail. 

* Navigate using a search engine. 

* Save benchmark projects and relevant documents on personal disk to be 

passed on to the next grade level. 

* Use a variety of grade level appropriate software to develop reading, 

language, social studies or science skills. 

 

Fifth Grade 

  

* Demonstrate proficiency in keyboarding by continuing to utilize word 

processing for reports and other school projects. 

* Continue to use desktop publishing skills in producing projects within 

curriculum areas. 

* Continue to use the Internet for research and information gathering using 

search engines, and downloading information onto a personal disk. 

* Use e-mail to communicate with other students via electronic pen pals 

and with experts to gather information. 

* Use a variety of grade level appropriate software to develop their reading, 

language, social studies and science skills. 

* Develop their skills using multimedia, scanners, digital cameras, video 

and audio systems.

Professional Development 

  

The Second Street School Community recognizes that technology will not of itself improve the educational program for our students. All of the members of the educational team must become familiar with and proficient in the use of available technology for the students to realize the maximum benefit of that technology. Teachers may be at differing levels of comfort and proficiency in computer use, the internet and various pieces of electronic equipment. For that reason, we see staff development as being a crucial component of our technology plan. It is not enough that some students are introduced to top technology because their teachers are knowledgeable about it. All students must be given the opportunity to participate in an organized and sequential program of instruction utilized throughout their years at Second Street. Teaching assistants must be computer literate if they are to assist students. 

 

Teachers 

  

* Will become proficient in basic word processing, spreadsheet and 

database programs. 

* Will become familiar with their grade level appropriate software in the 

areas of reading, language, social studies and science. 

* Will have a working knowledge of basic desktop publishing and 

multimedia functions. 

* Will have a working knowledge of the use of scanners, digital cameras, 

audio and other electronic media and become proficient with their use in 

the classroom. 

* Will have knowledge of the use of the internet and e-mail. 

* Will have the opportunity to continually upgrade their technological skills 

through professional development classes both on and off site and 

through peer coaching. 

* Will have the opportunity to attend conferences to keep up-to-date in 

current technology. 

 

Paraprofessionals 

  

* Will be given the opportunity to learn about and become familiar with their 

grade level appropriate software used in their classroom. 

* Will be given the opportunity for continuing training in technology used at 

their grade level. 

* Will have knowledge of the internet and e-mail. 

Parents 

  

* Continue to develop parent training classes at various levels of difficulty. 

* Continue to involve parents in the development and implementation of 

the Second Street Technology Plan. 

* Encourage parents to invest in a computer for home. 

* Encourage parents to apply for and use the internet. 

* Familiarize parents with the technology that their children are using in the 

classroom and in the lab. 

  

  

Technology Needs 

  

 The Second Street School community recognizes that technology continues to advance and that plans must include a continuing replacement and updating of hardware and software in order to provide our students with current technology. In addition, any plans may need to be modified in response to changes in students needs, curriculum, building and classroom modifications. We have, nevertheless, identified several specific goals that we hope to meet within the next three years. Our top priority is to make our classrooms exciting centers of learning utilizing technology in all areas of the curriculum. We hope to increase access to technology for all students. 

 

  

Infrastructure 

  

Our school needs a school wide upgrade of our electrical and telecommunications system in order to support the implementation of our technology plan. We need to have our school networked and made internet and cable ready so that all students and staff have access to technology. 

 

  

Classrooms 

  

* Provide all classrooms with five state of the art Macintosh computers with 

CD ROM and multimedia capability that are internet ready. 

* Network all of the school computers and provide access to the internet. 

* Connect classrooms to internet service providers e.g. Scholastic, Global 

School Network. 

* Install cabling to provide video drops in each classroom. 

* Provide printers for each classroom. 

* Provide an adequate projection or TV hook up for whole class 

demonstrations. 

* Provide digital camera, scanner and other digital equipment necessary 

for multimedia. 

* Provide satellite hook up for Galaxy or comparable distance learning 

program. 

* Provide FAX and phone lines to enable classes to participate in TEAMS 

Distance Learning programs and/or other comparable programs. 

 

 

  

Computer Lab 

  

* Provide 32 state of the art Macintosh computers so that students have 

access to their own computer station and do not waste time waiting for 

their turn. 

* Provide a sufficient number of quality printers so that students can print 

out their own material in a timely manner. 

* Provide quality and high speed digital equipment for use in multimedia 

presentations, e.g. scanners, digital cameras, video and audio 

equipment, editing systems. 

* Provide a high quality projection system for teacher and student 

presentations. 

* Acquire the GALAXY Distance Learning System, adding instructional 

components appropriate for each grade level. 

* Network all computers to a server. 

* Connect all computers to the Internet. 

* Provide a cable drop. 

* Provide FAX and phone capability. 

* Provide a systems operator to minimize downtime. 

  

Library 

  

Our school library is small and has remained the same as it was decades ago. Our goal is to convert our aging library into a larger, modern Library Media Center that can make the full use of available technology. 

 

 

* Install at least four computer workstations that are linked to the Internet 

and have access to Internet service providers. 

* Install an electric book check out system to reduce book loss. 

* Provide a library of appropriate software for student use in the Library 

Media Center. 

* Provide a library of books on computer and technology use for teacher, 

parent and student check-out. 

* Provide a TV and VCR and laser disc system to be used in the center. 

* Provide satellite and cable access. 

* Provide FAX capability. 

* Provide media management systems. 

Specific Hardware Needs

Computer/Technology Lab

  • A central computer hub(24 port or bigger!!). 
  • More cabling...Category 5, or Fiber Optic Cabling to replace existing Cat 5. 
  • 25 Power Mac's to place in lab. 
  • Printers for lab (ImageWriter recommended-will work w/ ][e thru P-Mac)
  • One Laser Lab Printer to handle all capacity jobs and schoolwide printing

 

Hardware

  • Power Mac's, needed to slowly fill in all gaps in middle grade classrooms who only have a ][c, ][c+ or ][gs. 
  • Ethernet cards to be placed in Internet capable computers.(Need two more) 
  • Hubs (one 24 port, three 12 port) for use throughout school 
  • Security Devices Accessories(replacement locks, adapters,
